Deltapontjes 2020 [English]
14 Each day, this foot passenger ferry takes approximately 200 pupils and commuters across the Oude Maas. Passengers can board at Puttershoek in the old- fashioned ’t Veerhuys’ cafe. In Groote Lindt (municipality of Zwijndrecht), the ferry departs from the ARA Hotel. Both establishments have waterfront dining areas, offering views of the Oude Maas. Over 50,000 cyclists and walking enthusiasts use the ferry every year. The ferry also operates at the weekend during the summertime, especially for this group. The foot passenger ferry plays a vital role in connecting various cycling routes on IJsselmonde and in the Hoeksche Waard. History The Puttershoek – Groote Lindt ferry has been in operation for a very long time, with a ferry service dating back as far as 1439. The construction of the Barendrechtse bridge in 1888, and the introduction of cars, meant the ferry became less essential. In 2005, the end of this ferry connection seemed very near. Fortunately, a number of stakeholders were able to prevent this from happening however, resulting in the salvation of this centuries-old ferry connection in 2006. And to this very day, the foot passenger ferry is fully operational, and its use has since doubled! Puttershoek – Zwijndrecht
