Deltapontjes 2020 [English]

Brielse Meer 1 May 2020 is the 50th anniversary of the foot/ bike ferry connection across the Brielse Meer lake. Starting this season, you’ll be able to cross it in near-silent mode, as it is now electrically operated by solar panels and batteries. The pick-up points are both on the north and south side of the lake. The ferry is also connected to points 26 and 27 of the cycling network. The Brielse Meer is an elongated lake of around 10 km in length, and forms the boundary between Voorne and the Europoort. This freshwater lake is a beloved spot for all kinds of water sports, such as swimming, kayaking and SUPping, and has lots of marinas, cafes and restaurants. Close to the pick-up point on the north side of the lake is the water sports centre Brielle. Here, there are various (motor) boats for hire, enabling you to discover the lake on your own. There is also a terrace with a lovely lake view, as well as charging stations for visitors on e-bikes. During its rich history, the city has accommodated royalty, and many admirals, writers, poets and martyrs resided there. The old citadel was at one time the most famous pilgrimage site in Zuid-Holland and has over 300 listed buildings. On 1 April 1572, Brielle was captured by the so-called Watergeuzen (meaning ‘sea beggars’), which earned it a prominent place within Dutch history. 18
