These are mostly either young seal pups that have lost their mother, or injured or sickly seals. Once the seals have been nursed back to a healthy state and able to survive in the wild, they are released. Before this happens, they must take several strides (or swimming strokes) on their road to recovery. For more information on A Seal, go to: www.aseal.nl . Hellevoetsluis The town’s fantastic location on the vast Haringvliet has significantly impacted the course of Hellevoetsluis’ history, which is known as a ‘Fortress in the Haringvliet’ for good reason. This fortress city, with its harbours and defensive bulwarks, is home to a veritable treasure trove of history. There has always been a close connection between Hellevoetsluis and water. Thanks to its favourable and strategic position on the Haringvliet, Hellevoetsluis became a home port for the Dutch war fleet in the early 17th century. The port was repeatedly reinforced as time went on, resulting in its unique dual identity as fortified city and war port. It was home to storied admirals of the Dutch fleet such as De Ruyter, Tromp and Piet Hein. There are many attractions from Dutch maritime history within the fortress walls, and within walking distance of the ferry stop for Expedition Haringvliet, as well as inviting outdoor cafes. You can also explore the picturesque Voorne-Putten by bicycle, by following the numbered cycle guide points. 26 Haringvliet destinations
