Willemstad If you’re looking to go back in time, then Willemstad is a great place to journey to. Once one of the most strategically positioned fortified cities owned by William of Orange, the connection with the royal House of Orange is still evident, as even today, King Willem-Alexander bears the title ‘Lord of Willemstad’. Willemstad is basically one large historical monument, and strolling through it will bring some of the most turbulent eras in Dutch history back to life. The barrels of old cannons leer over the high walls of the city - but don’t worry, these cannons are more of a welcoming committee than a threat! Numansdorp On the west side of the Hoeksche Waard is the village of Numansdorp, next to the Hollands Diep. This villa- ge was founded in 1642 and named after the very first landlord, Gerard Numan. Wander through the enjoyable Voorstraat, which has many wonderful options for eating and shopping. Also worth a visit is the Fort Buitensluis. Find out all about this fort that was erected in 1793/1794, and which is located directly on the Hollands Diep. 28
